# Samskrift > Samskrift (samskrift.com) is a free, real-time collaborative LaTeX editor. Write LaTeX together with live cursors, compile to PDF instantly (pdfLaTeX, XeLaTeX, LuaLaTeX on a full TeX Live distribution), and share projects with view or edit links. AI agents can work in it directly over MCP. A free alternative to Overleaf. The name is Swedish: sam- (together) + skrift (writing), roughly "writing together". It is a brand name, not a misspelling of Sanskrit. Key facts: - Free: unlimited projects, unlimited collaborators, full version history, and AI writing tools with a generous daily allowance. - Real-time collaboration: shared cursors, presence, built-in project chat, inline comment threads, and track changes. - Full compile stack: pdfLaTeX / XeLaTeX / LuaLaTeX, BibTeX and biblatex, TikZ, beamer, and the standard TeX Live package set. No artificial compile timeout. - Version history: every edit is logged per file with side-by-side diffs, snapshots, and one-click restore. - Easy import: upload a project zip (or paste a link to it) and everything comes across — files, folders, figures, bibliographies. Full source exports as a zip at any time; no lock-in. - Works on mobile and survives connection drops: documents are cached locally and merge back automatically when you reconnect. - AI tools (optional, can be disabled per account): inline rewrite with diff preview, one-click table and figure editing, compile-error fixing you review before it applies, image-to-LaTeX/TikZ conversion, and a draw-to-find symbol search. - Editor: LaTeX autocomplete (refs, citations, environments, graphics), spell-check in 20+ languages with auto-detection, Vim mode, SyncTeX jump between source and PDF, visual table editor, code folding, command palette. - Built for AI agents: an MCP server at https://samskrift.com/mcp lets Claude, ChatGPT, Codex and other agents create projects, edit files, compile, read history and join the project chat, as the person who connected them. Every main page is also available as markdown: add .md to the address (/index.md for the home page), or request the page with Accept: text/markdown. ## Pages - [Home](https://samskrift.com/index.md): product overview and sign-up - [For AI agents](https://samskrift.com/agents.md): why and how AI agents use Samskrift: compile LaTeX, keep history, collaborate with people - [Connect AI](https://samskrift.com/connect.md): step-by-step setup for Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex and other MCP clients, plus the full tool reference - [Features](https://samskrift.com/features.md): everything that's included, and what's on the way - [FAQ](https://samskrift.com/faq.md): pricing, importing projects, package support, collaborators, offline use, the name - [Templates](https://samskrift.com/templates.md): free LaTeX templates (CV, thesis, IEEE paper, Beamer slides, poster and more) with compiled previews - [Changelog](https://samskrift.com/changelog.md): dated log of every shipped feature and improvement ## For AI agents - [MCP server](https://samskrift.com/mcp): Streamable HTTP, OAuth 2.1 sign-in - [MCP Server Card](https://samskrift.com/mcp/server-card): connection details before connecting - [AI Catalog](https://samskrift.com/.well-known/ai-catalog.json): domain-level discovery - [llms.txt](https://samskrift.com/llms.txt): overview of the site for language models - [This page as markdown](https://samskrift.com/agents.md): no layout, just the text - [Tool reference](https://samskrift.com/connect.md): every tool and its arguments ## Optional - [About](https://samskrift.com/about): why Samskrift exists and who builds it - [Privacy & terms](https://samskrift.com/privacy): what is stored, where (EU), who can see it, which services process it, how to delete
