Frequently asked questions
- What is Samskrift?
- Samskrift is a collaborative LaTeX editor that runs in your browser. You and your co-authors edit the same document in real time, compile it to PDF in one click, and keep every change in version history. Nothing to install.
- Is Samskrift free?
- Yes. Unlimited projects, unlimited collaborators.
- Can I import my Overleaf projects?
- Yes. Download any Overleaf project as a zip and drop it on your Samskrift dashboard (or use New project → Upload zip), or simply paste a link to the project and it gets imported for you. Files, folders, figures, and bibliographies all come across.
- Does it support the same LaTeX packages as Overleaf?
- Compilation runs on a full TeX Live distribution, so the standard package ecosystem works: pdfLaTeX, XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX, BibTeX and biblatex, TikZ, beamer, and thousands more.
- Does my AI agent work in Samskrift?
- Yes. Samskrift has a built-in MCP server, so agents like Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, and Codex can list your projects, read and edit files, compile, and join the project chat — signed in as you, with every change in version history. In Claude, find Samskrift in the Connectors Directory and click Connect; other assistants take the MCP link as a custom connector. Setup takes about a minute. See the Connect AI guide.
- How many people can edit a document at once?
- There is no collaborator limit. Share an edit link, or add co-authors by email with their own permissions and send them the project link; everyone gets live cursors, presence, chat, comments, and track changes.
- Does it work on mobile or with a flaky connection?
- Yes. The editor works on phones and tablets, and documents are cached on your device, so edits keep working through connection drops and merge back automatically when you reconnect.
- What does the name Samskrift mean?
- It comes from Swedish: sam- means together and skrift means writing, so Samskrift is roughly “writing together”. Which is the whole idea.
