Using symbols in LaTeX

How to find a LaTeX symbol

Type what the symbol is called or what it means: not equal, infinity, therefore, subset, degree, euro. You can also paste the character itself, like ≤ or ∀, and the search finds its command.

If you don't know the name, draw it in the box. Recognition runs on your device using Detexify's community handwriting samples, so it's instant and works offline once loaded. Click a result to copy its command.

Math mode and text mode

Most symbols are maths and must sit inside math mode: $\alpha$ in a sentence, or inside \[ ... \] and equation for displayed formulas. Typing \alpha outside math mode stops the compile with “Missing $ inserted”.

Text symbols such as \textdegree, \S or \textregistered go straight into running text. Each symbol on this page says which mode it needs.

The angle is $\theta = 45^\circ$, so $\sin\theta \approx 0.707$.

\[
  \forall \varepsilon > 0 \; \exists \delta > 0 : |x - a| < \delta \Rightarrow |f(x) - f(a)| < \varepsilon
\]

Symbols that need a package

Core LaTeX and amsmath cover the common Greek letters, operators, relations and arrows. Many others live in packages: amssymb (for example \mathbb, \therefore, \leqslant), stmaryrd, wasysym, marvosym, textcomp and more. When a symbol needs one, it's shown next to the command.

Add the package once to your preamble with \usepackage{amssymb}. In Samskrift's editor, inserting a symbol from the palette adds the package for you.

Common symbols at a glance

Relations: \leq ≤, \geq ≥, \neq ≠, \approx ≈, \equiv ≡, \sim ∼, \in ∈, \subseteq ⊆. Operators: \times ×, \cdot ·, \pm ±, \div ÷, \cup ∪, \cap ∩.

Arrows: \to →, \Rightarrow ⇒, \iff ⟺, \mapsto ↦. Big operators: \sum ∑, \prod ∏, \int ∫, \oint ∮. Misc: \infty ∞, \partial ∂, \nabla ∇, \forall ∀, \exists ∃, \emptyset ∅.

Questions

Why do I get “Undefined control sequence” for a symbol?
The command needs a package you haven't loaded, or it's misspelled. Check the package shown next to the symbol here and add \usepackage{...} to your preamble.
Is my drawing sent anywhere?
No. The recogniser downloads once (about 1 MB) and then compares your strokes with the sample set inside your browser.
What if a symbol isn't listed?
This page covers over a thousand of the most used symbols. For rarer ones, the Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List on CTAN documents many thousands more, along with the packages that provide them.
